Austin Art in Public Places, Austin, Texas
Commissioned by Austin Art in Public Places for the Circle C Fire/EMS Station, Karst Circle relates to local geology, healing energy, and fire. A circle of limestone boulders harvested from the building excavation refers to ancient healing sites. The circle is located in a stormwater recharge basin and is filled with a native grass (bushy bluestem, Andropogon glomeratus) that grows in moist places in Central Texas, especially those that are subject to periodic burning. The orange winter color of the grasses symbolizes fire, and the firemen maintain a pure stand of grasses by burning them at the end of each winter.
