Visual continuity with the surrounding Winterthur garden was established by incorporating broken statuary, architectural fragments and other artifacts that had been stored on the Winterthur estate. The Acorn Tearoom's columns came from H. F. du Pont's mother's rose arbor, dismantled to make room for an addition to the museum. The table and chairs are decorated with carved acorns, alluding to the oak trees towering overhead. Above right: a preliminary design sketch. Below right: the recycled columns arriving on the site.
