Cathedral Clearing

Peirce’s Woods, Longwood Gardens

Mature oaks and maples tower above the Cathedral Clearing, the largest room in Peirce's Woods. Visitors enter and gasp at the combination of Tiarella cordifolia (Allegheny foamflower) and Phlox stolonifera 'Sherwood Purple" (bottom photo). They stop, take a picture, and write down the names of the plants so they can use them at home, which is what Peirce's Woods is all about. A long sweep of foamflower (top) is played against a lush green carpet of native pachysandra (Pachysandra procumbens).
